Ethical Hacker - Nikita Shakhulov
The worst book of the week :)
The book starts with a gloomy litany of terms and international standards that were machine-translated without proofreading for grammar or gender agreement. Sometimes it’s physically painful to read :)
This is supposed to be introductory information for the reader, but none of it is connected. It feels like the author wanted to write a book or an article and just defined the main chapters and dumped Wikipedia content into them without reviewing. The author cites statistics from a government department without specifying the country, but it later becomes clear from pounds sterling that it’s the UK :)
Then the author talks about how to protect your company. What security policies are needed and how they help secure proper security budgets. How to become a security professional and increase your chances of employment. Where to get training. What certifications to obtain. You want to ask, “Nikita, where’s the ethical hacking?!” :)
Then the author seems to start the topic of ethical hacking, but it gets even worse. Here are a couple of excerpts, all spelling and punctuation preserved:
“Web applications are software that users access on the Internet through their web browsers. Since this was a breeding ground for cyberattacks, studying these web applications has become crucial for ethical hackers to protect organizational data. By studying software such as HTML, JavaScript, and PHP, an ethical hacker can provide a database that protects them.”
“Social engineering is the psychological manipulation of users to perform actions or transfer confidential/personal information that could threaten a business. Ethical hackers replicate these tricks to test loopholes, making it a desirable skill in them.”
At this point I gave up and couldn’t read any further :) The author apparently has 8 books on Litres. I read the titles of these books, and I don’t understand how a publisher releases this and Litres hosts it.
